Senator Delano Seiveright, State Minister in the Tourism Ministry
The Ministry of Tourism says a new weekly nonstop flight will be operating from Lisbon, Portugal to Montego Bay.
The country welcomed the inaugural flight on Wednesday.
The fully booked World2Fly flight had 360 primarily Portuguese nationals aboard.
State Minister for Tourism Senator Delano Seiveright said the inaugural flight is in keeping with the ministry's ongoing thrust to diversify the country's tourism markets.
"And it's working. We're attracting more flights. For example, LATAM, out of Lima, Peru is doing very well with over 80% load factors. And now we have here World2Fly, a charter service that is running full flights from Lisbon, Portugal into Montego Bay. Of course, due to the very strong demand, the airline has actually extended the service all the way into October, so they've gone beyond the summer itself. It's a clear signal that there's a lot of confidence in Jamaica's destination. And they're seeing very high bookings and they're very happy about it," touted the state minister.
Senator Seiveright said the flights will help to boost arrivals and economic activity for Jamaica.
"It isn't just about tourism numbers. It means more jobs, more opportunities, more income for Jamaicans across the board as we build a stronger and more resilient tourism product."
