Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar has warned Venezuela against military action on the twin island republic.

Venezuela has stated that it is intent on pursuing gang members after claims that Colombian paramilitary groups were using Trinidad to enter eastern Venezuela.

But Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar said her country will not cower her in fear.

"The fact is that as a responsible government, we have to take all threats against any incursion into our territory seriously. I will speak to Minister of Defence, attorney general, to seek advice on protections for our Coast Guard to use deadly force on any unidentified vessel entering TT waters from Venezuela smuggling military abled-bodied men and women. T&T is off limits to them. Following comments from Maduro and Cabello, we now have to now take seriously the threat by that government sending their agents into our country to commit acts that can be adverse to our own welfare," she warned.

The Prime Minister was speaking at the news conference on Thursday.
