Police commit to building on gains in crime reduction

Deputy Commission of Police Richard Stewart, head of the JCF's crime and security portfolio

The Police High Command has restated its commitment to building on the gains made in reducing crime.

Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the crime and security portfolio, Richard Stewart, says the country's security situation is stable and steadily improving.

"While we continue to face complex challenges, strategic investments in modern policing methods, data-driven intelligence, legislative reform, and community partnerships are viewed as tangible results. Crime is trending down in several major categories across the country and citizens are witnessing a more responsive, professional and engaged police force. Currently, the country is seeing an overall reduction of 16.2 per cent in major crimes. Murders are down by 42.1 per cent while shootings are down by 34.9 per cent," he outlined, noting that "The Jamaica Constabulary Force remains focused and resolute in its mission to dismantle criminal networks and protect the vulnerable."

DCP Stewart added that the St. Andrew North Division is reaping the rewards of major investments in the fight against crime.

"This year, the St. Andrew North Division has experienced an approximate 37 per cent reduction in murders. Notably, the community of Stony Hill is also benefitting in the downward trend of violent crime, with marked improvements in public order, reduced incidents of serious offences and increased collaboration between residents and the police. The Stony Hill police area is currently experiencing 50 per cent reduction in murders," he highlighted.

DCP Stewart was speaking Wednesday at the official opening of the Stony Hill Police Station in St. Andrew.
