Some 274 vehicles valued at $1.7 billion were handed over to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) on Wednesday morning.
They included 90 motorcycles.
National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang handed over the vehicles at the Office of the Commissioner of Police in St. Andrew.
Minister Chang said the procurement and handing over the vehicles weeks before the financial year ends demonstrates the government's commitment to boosting national security.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Dr. Kevin Blake described the handover as a strategic deployment of a diverse set of vehicles that will bolster the JCF.
"Among these vehicles handed over today are 121 pickups. And these include Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi Triton. We also have 55 SUVs, Toyota RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outlander, as well as the Kia Sorento. We have three Coaster and five Hiace buses. We have also 90 motorcycles and these are the Yamaha FZN250," he outlined.
Dr. Blake said this variety of assets underscores the JCF's understanding of modern policing realities.
"We are no longer just acquiring vehicles. We are engineering a fleet that reflects the complexities of law enforcement in the 21st century," he said.
