Policeman charged in cocaine bust offered $2.5 million bail

The policeman arrested and charged last week in connection with a multi-million dollar cocaine bust in St. Andrew was released on bond Wednesday.

Inspector Martin Walker was offered bail in the sum of $2.5 million following a bail hearing before the St. Andrew Parish Court.

Addressing the judge in the courtroom packed with members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, lead attorney Christopher Townsend argued that Inspector Walker was a proper candidate for bail and was not a flight risk.

He added that Inspector Walker had an unblemished record in his 31 years in the JCF.

Prosecutors did not oppose bail.

Inspector Walker is to return to court in March 23.

Walker, who is attached to the Fraud Squad unit of the JCF's Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigations Banch (C-TOC), has been charged with the offences of conspiracy to export cocaine, along with possession, dealing and transporting cocaine.

He was arrested along Moore Street in Woodford Park in St. Andrew during an operation by the Narcotics Division last week Thursday.

Twelve pounds of cocaine with a street value of more than J$30 million were allegedly found in his private vehicle.

Two members of the Jamaica Defence Force were also arrested in the operation, but they were later released.
