A man died Wednesday while cutting trees for lumber in a section of Millbank, Portland after being hit by a falling tree.
Superintendent Lloyd Darby, head of the Portland Police, says the mishap occurred about 3:00 p.m. in Comfort Castle.
He is cautioning people who carry out this activity to educate themselves on best practices and to be careful.
"This tree-cutting situation is not the first that accidents have occurred and loss of life have occurred from persons cutting trees. So you have to exercise all the care and really, if you don't have the expertise to know which side of the tree to cut, where it will fall, how you use your ropes and chains to guide it; all precautions must be taken because this is really another unfortunate loss of life of a productive member of our parish," he lamented.
