The People's National Party's Leon Thomas has retained his mayoral position in the city municipality of Portmore.

Mr. Thomas, who was sworn in Tuesday morning, says under his leadership, Portmore will be a model municipality.

Following Tuesday morning's swearing in ceremony, Mayor Thomas, while addressing supporters, called for collaboration and corporation among members of the council, the business community and residents.

"Now that the campaign is over and we move forward into another phase of our future, I hope it will be based on mutual respect, interests, faith, determination and brotherly love for one another."

Mayor Thomas has pledged to help rid Portmore of criminality and has committed to implementing a series of projects for the municipality.

"We will work closely with the police to tackle the crime and violence that seems to be creeping in into this municipality. We want none of that. There are no shortcuts for the journey ahead. We will work hard, take risks, become inventors and creators, so that Portmore is continuously maintained and our infrastructure improved upon. Our sustainable development plan is ready and we will be rolling it out in May," he announced.

Coming out of February's local government election win for the PNP in the city municipality, the mayor also urged supporters to rally behind him and the party heading into the next parliamentary election.
