Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced a multipronged programme to provide assistance to those in greatest need following the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
Prime Minister Holness says the Relief Emergency Assistance and Community Help (REACH) programme will focus on providing immediate assistance and lay the groundwork for long-term recovery and resilience.
Speaking yesterday in the House of Representatives, he noted that the major elements of the programme include the distribution of food and essential supplies, and so far approximately 5,000 families have received care packages containing enough food for four days through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
Additionally, Prime Minister Holness has announced that each constituency will be allocated $9 million in two tranches to hurricane recovery and other efforts.
He says an initial $5 million will be provided from the Constituency Development Fund for relief activities for individuals, while the remaining $4 million is expected to be used for shelter issues and economic recovery efforts after completing the expenditure of the first allocation.
