Fitzroy Johnson, a resident of Grants Pen in St. Thomas
Work on a section of the Southern Coastal Highway Improvement Project in St. Thomas was halted on Wednesday afternoon due to a protest by residents of Grants Pen.
It has caused a pile up of traffic.
Scores of placard-bearing residents protested against plans by the contractor of the project to divert traffic from their community.
It's understood that traffic will be diverted in order to continue work on a section of the road.
But a resident, Fitzroy Johnson, explained that the diversion of traffic could create challenges for residents as they will not have access to transportation.
He said the access road being created is one mile away from the community which will force residence to walk that distance through a crocodile habitat in order to get transportation.
"Our commercial part of our community will be dormant because nobody will be driving a mile to Grants Pen and then turn back - vehicle, juice truck, bread van, and everything - so we have a problem," he added.
The residents are calling for a meeting with the National Works Agency.
