Recent rainfall not sufficient to improve crop production, says JAS

The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) says recent rainfall in sections of the island has not been enough to significantly improve agricultural production.

JAS President Owen Dobson says prolonged drought conditions have severely affected crops, particularly vegetables, “because they are short term crops and they take a lot of water to produce.”

He says, while some western parishes have received limited rainfall, farmers need more consistent rain to see meaningful benefits in crop production.

He told Radio Jamaica News that eastern parishes continue to grapple with prolonged drought which is prolonging the challenge being faced by farmers.
