Residents call for garbage collection, fear for rat infestation

The non collection of garbage in several communities in weeks have had residents fuming and calling for immediate action to be taken to prevent a rodent infestation.

Residents in Thornton, Siloah Maggotty and sections of Haughton and Newton say that have not had their garbage collected in weeks.

They say the situation has resulted in a plie up of garbage and there are now fears of a rodent infestation.

Councillor for the Ipswich Division Errol Hummingbird told RJR News that with three schools within the Maggotty area along with several shops there is the urgent need for garbage to be removed from the community.

Over in the Siloah community residents in the housing scheme say they have not seen a garbage truck in weeks.

The residents say with the rains the area is now experiencing it is now a prime breeding ground for rodents and other household pests.

They're calling on Southern Parks and Markets to immediately begin the removal of garbage before a major outbreak of disease results from the pile up of garbage.

Efforts to reach the offices of SPM in Mandeville or the supervisor for the Nothern Section of St Elizabeth have been unsuccessful.
