Reversal of Weinstein rape conviction disheartening, says victims' group

The Silence Breakers, a victims' group has labelled the reversal of the 2020 rape conviction of disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein as disheartening and profoundly unjust.

The New York appeals court said prosecutors in the pivotal #MeToo case called witnesses whose accusations were not part of the charges against him.

This meant that Mr. Weinstein was unfairly tried for past behaviour.

He has been ordered a new trial.

Lawyers for his victims said the decision to retry was a leap backwards.

The 72-year-old remains in prison.

He was separately convicted of rape in Los Angeles.
