RNC kicks off just days after Trump assassination attempt

Donald Trump is in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, two days after he survived an assassination attempt.

The former president named JD Vance, the senator of Ohio, to be his running mate and vice-president if he returns to the White House.

Mr. Vance was once a critic of the former president, but he has since become one of the candidate's most trusted defenders on Capitol Hill and in the media.

Mr. Trump also enjoyed a big legal win earlier on Monday, after a judge in Florida threw out the classified documents case against him.

The presumptive Republican nominee says it should be the first step in dismissing other criminal cases against him.

Meanwhile, the fallout from Saturday's shooting continues with the US Homeland Security secretary saying the gunman should never have had a direct line of sight.

Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle says they are working to prevent a similar incident from ever taking place again.

Donald Trump was holding a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania when shots rang out, hitting his right ear and streaking his face with blood, on Saturday.

A 20-year-old man carrying an AR-15-style rifle, who was taken down by snipers, is responsible for the shooting.
