Robinson says PNP gov't will reinstate Public Sector Monitoring Committee

Opposition Spokesman on Finance Julian Robinson

Opposition Spokesman on Finance Julian Robinson says the People's National Party (PNP) intends to reinstate the Public Sector Monitoring Committee to address industrial unrest in the public sector.

In his contribution to the Budget Debate on Thursday, he called for the government to address the concerns of public sector employees before heading into the new round of wage negotiations.

Pointing to the issue of increments, Mr. Robinson questioned whether the budget presented by Finance Minister Fayval Williams on Tuesday provides for the payment of those increments agreed between the government and trade unions, as well as the wage claims that the government has received from the unions.

"It is important to know so that unions who are expecting that those payments are going to be made at the beginning of the new financial year will know whether that will be done," he said.

The opposition spokesman recalled that the last PNP government had established the Public Sector Monitoring Committee, which he said was a "critical platform that brought unions to the table, ensuring consultation, transparency and trust in decision-making".

Mr. Robinson said the PNP will restore that committee when it regains power, as he believes it will promote dialogue, respect and fairness in negotiations with the public sector.
