Russia denies Trump call with Putin urging restraint in Ukraine

The Kremlin has denied media reports that US President-elect Donald Trump held a call with Vladimir Putin, in which he is said to have warned the Russian president against escalating the war in Ukraine.

The call, which was first reported by the Washington Post on Sunday, is said to have happened on Thursday.

Mr. Trump is also reported to have mentioned America's extensive military presence in Europe to MrPutin.

A Kremlin spokesperson said the reports were pure fiction, while Mr. Trump's team told the BBC that it would not comment on the president-elect's private calls.

Mr. Trump has promised to end the nearly three-year long war in Ukraine, but has yet to outline how he intends to do so.

Meanwhile, Mr. Trump has made two more key appointments ahead of his return to the White House in January.

Tom Homan, who served in the last Trump administration, will be the "border tsar".

He says any Democrats who want to block plans for mass deportations of illegal immigrants should get out of the Rebublican administration's way.

New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik will become US ambassador to the United Nations.

The Republicans are also edging closer to taking full control of Congress - they already have the Senate and counting for the House continues.
