School children rescued after boat capsizes in Guyana

The Guyana police have confirmed that six children were rescued on Tuesday after the canoe in which they were returning home to Venezuela capsized.

Police said the children were students of a primary school in Guyana and were returning to their San Martin community on the Venezuelan side of the border when the incident occurred.

The police said the children, aged six to 11 years, were rescued by citizens and were later examined by medical officials in the presence of their parents.

Despite the border controversy between Guyana and Venezuela, nationals of the neighbouring South American countries move freely across their border.
