President of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) Leighton Johnson is calling for school administrators to impose tougher sanctions against unruly students causing mayhem in schools.

His comment follows a series of violent incidents involving students across sections of the island last week.

"We are urging school administrators and boards to make the decisions, the right decisions, the decisions that will ensure the safety and security of all stakeholders, students, teachers, all other categories of staff. At this time, we must ensure that there are systems in place to secure all stakeholders of schools," he urged.

A 15-year-old student of Irwin High School in St. James was fatally stabbed on Thursday during an altercation with other students.

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The dispute, which reportedly stemmed from a love triangle, forced Mona High School to close its doors on Thursday and Friday.
