Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton has announced that several critical areas at Cornwall Regional Hospital will reopen in the first half of next year.

The multi-storey hospital is being extensively redeveloped, in a process that has already lasted several years, and at a cost that has far exceeded the initial budget.

Dr Tufton, addresseing the House of Representativeds on Tuesday, said the areas to be reopened first are important to the effective management of the hospital.

The medical records department, dietary department, the general stores, and the server rooms, "will be fully rehabilitated and operational" by April, he said.

"These areas are critical to the proper functioning of the hospital and are being prioritised to ensure that when full hospital operations are restarted, they can provide the appropriate support to patients and staff," he added.

He said a fully equipped accident and emergency department is also to be opened in the first half of next year.

New CT and MRI machines will be among the priority items provided for the A&E Department, he told the House.

Children & Adolescent Hospital

Dr Tufton also told the House that the Western Children and Adolescent Hospital, being constructed on the same property on which Cornwall Regional stands, is on track to be opened by May or June next year.

The new hospital will provide an additional 250 beds to the national stock of hospital bed spaces, he explained, and to provide the required services, he said "over 300" new healthcare workers will be hired, in the first phase.
