Shrimp found in canned sardines

The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) is investigating reports of shrimp being found in some canned sardines on the local market.

So far the agency has received five complaints from the public.

A statement from the CAC says subsequent to its discussions with the unnamed local distributor of the canned products, the problem was linked to the diet of herring from which sardines are typically packed.

The local distributor is awaiting further information from its supplier in Canada to determine the next course of action.

The Commission is working with the relevant agents and the distributor to expedite the process in order to ascertain whether high shrimp content pertains to a particular batch of sardines or production period.

In the meantime, the CAC is warning consumers who may be allergic to shrimp or shell fish to examine the contents of sardine cans carefully before consuming or refrain from eating sardines until the matter has been resolved.

In addition, consumers who have purchased these cans should take samples to the nearest CAC office or the point of sale for further instructions.
