Some flights to Jamaica cancelled or delayed amid global technology outage

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz

There have been several flight cancellations and delays in arrivals to Jamaica after a global technology outage affected multiple industries on Friday.

The issue was caused when an update from cyber-security firm, Crowdstrike, caused Microsoft systems to blue screen and crash.

The boss of Crowdstrike has admitted it could be some time before all systems are back up and running.

While the software bug has been fixed, experts say the manual reboot of each affected Microsoft computer will take a huge amount of work.

US airlines - United, American, Delta, JetBlue and Spirit - all use the software and have been affected by the outage.

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz said there have been a few cancellations while other airlines have reported some delays.

"So I advise persons travelling to contact the airlines or the website to see exactly what the delay and cancellations are," he said.

MBJ Airports, operator of Sangster International, has said two incoming and two outgoing flights have been cancelled due to the outage.

The affected flights are Spirit Airlines, NK833 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida: American Airlines - AA875 - from Charlotte, North Carolina: Spirit Airlines NK270 to Fort Lauderdale; and American Airlines - AA875 to Charlotte, North Carolina.

The airport says other flights have been impacted which will result in delays.

Spirit has also cancelled a flight that was scheduled to arrive at Norman Manley International Airport.

The tech disruptions across the world have hit airlines, banks, businesses, schools, government and some emergency services, with one expert saying it could be the largest IT outage in history.

Along with the US, airlines in Europe and Asia are also seeing disruptions.

Critical services, including 911 were disrupted in several states in the US, while banks in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Britain have been impacted, as have health services in Israel, Germany, and the UK.
