The Community Safety and Security unit of the St. Catherine South Police has revealed that the majority of people reported missing in the division are children.
Sixty per cent of the 131 missing people reported were children, with the majority being girls.
Sub-officer in charge of the missing persons unit, Detective Corporal Diana Grant said the situation is troubling, but added that the police are working to remedy the issue.
While many return home, she said the police are working to provide some intervention for these children and to find out what underlying factors led them to leave home.
She also suggested that it may be necessary to start a training programme with parents to help prevent these occurrences.
Detective Corporal Grant was speaking at a safe school meeting on missing persons and sexual offences, at Portmore Police Station in St. Catherine on Wednesday.
She said abuse, family conflict, neglect, peer pressure, romantic relationships, a need for independence and lack of support to deal with mental issues are among the major push factors for runaway children.
