St. James police chief rejects claims that cops targeted home of four year-old shooting victim

Senior Superintendent of Police Eron Samuels

Commanding officer for the St. James Police Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Eron Samuels, has rejected claims that the police deliberately targeted the home where a four year-old boy was killed during an incident on New Year's night.

SSP Samuels, speaking at Thursday's monthly meeting of the St. James Municipal Corporation, described the suggestion as irresponsible and stressed that the fatal shooting of Romaine Bowman remains under investigation.

SSP Samuels was responding to concerns raised by Councillor for the Granville Division Michael Troupe, who questioned whether adequate checks were carried out before the police entered the community.

He said the police were responding to reports of a “gun salute” taking place in the community when the shooting took place.

“While police officers work incidents will happen; (if) they come under attack, they’ll defend themselves… but it’s very unfortunate that, in this situation, a four year-old succumbed to injuries during that gunfight,” he said.

That incident is being investigated and, accordingly, SSP Samuels said he did not wish to comment extensively on the matter.
