Street light theft on the rise

A warning has been issued for members of the public to be on the lookout for persons who have been stealing street lights. The problem is said to be escalating.

According to Keith Garvey, Jamaica Public Service Company’s (JPS) Region South director, thieves have been targeting street lights in certain sections of the island.

He said that in his area which stretches from St. Elizabeth to Portmore, streets lights are being removed. He urged customers to not allow anyone to remove street lights and said more than likely the removal is not authorized. The area covers about 240,000 or 40 per cent of JPS customer base.
