Suriname has nominated Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation Minister Albert Ramdin for the position of Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS).
At the same time, the Dutch-speaking CARICOM country has withdrawn its bid to host the 54th regular general meeting of the OAS later this year.
In a letter to OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro dated January 3, Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi said the offer was being withdrawn as the government recognised the potential for perceived advantages by hosting the General Assembly, where discussions regarding the next Secretary General will occur.
Suriname says it is prepared to host the OAS general meeting in 2026.
