Tax Administration Jamaica is denying reports that workers at the Port Antonio Tax Office in Portland are staging a sickout over malfunctioning air conditioning units.

But TAJ has admitted that the AC units have been causing discomfort to staff, especially those with respiratory challenges.

Meris Haughton, Chief Corporate Communications Officer at TAJ, says the Port Antonio office is operating with limited staff while the units are being fixed.

"There is no sick out.... We can confirm that there is an issue with the AC. Work is being done on the AC and based on the work that is being done, there are some things emanating from it that some persons are not able to deal with. So those persons have been allowed to be on the outside," she admitted.

She said the office is still open to customers, with limited services being offered.

"Tomorrow, however, let me just say that we're going to be doing a more fulsome fix of the situation, so the system will be switched out. So we're going to be closing tomorrow to allow for that to happen," Ms. Haughton advised.

Reports of the alleged sickout have been widely circulated on social media.
