The taxi driver who was shot by the police in Half Way Tree, St. Andrew on Friday morning is in hospital under police guard.
It's reported that about 7:15 a.m., the driver was instructed by the police to stop but he allegedly disobeyed and attempted to flee, hitting the officer with his vehicle in the process.
It is further alleged that the cop pulled his service weapon and opened fire, hitting the cabbie.
The driver managed to flee the scene but Senior Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, head of the St. Andrew Central Division, says he was taken into custody after he turned up for treatment at hospital claiming to be someone else and to have been shot and wounded elsewhere.
SSP Nesbeth disclosed to Radio Jamaica News that this is the third time the taxi operator has hit a police officer with his vehicle.
He is facing multiple charges.
The Independent Commission of Investigations is probing the incident.
