Taxi strike in Manchester delays students returning to school

Students attending various schools in Manchester experienced delays on Monday morning following a protest by taxi operators in Christiana.

The operators withdrew their service for several hours to protest the long-standing issue of inadequate parking in the town.

The operators say the area they were relocated to on Market Street cannot accommodate the large number of taxis.

Additionally, they say it is unsafe as they have to contend with extortion and petty crimes.

They also complain of being ticketed when forced to load their cars on the main road because of the cramped space they now operate from.

Commuter Gary Rowe, who was among commuters inconvenienced by Monday's protest, said he understands the taxi operators' plight.
