Three killed, another wounded in Hanover gun attack

Senior Superintendent Glenford Miller, head of the Area One Police and National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang
By Clinton McGregor

The Area One Police has launched a search for two men who carried out a deadly attack in Johnson Town, Hanover, on Thursday night, leaving three men dead and a fourth nursing bullet wounds.

A father and son are among the dead.

They have been identified as 41-year-old Merrick Calvin and his 21-year-old son, Merrick Calvin Jr.

The third man has not yet been identified.

Senior Superintendent Glenford Miller, head of the Area One Police, who visited the scene, told Radio Jamaica News that the men were at a work site about 8:30 p.m. when they were attacked by two suspects on a motorcycle who opened fire at them.

Two of the men died at the scene. The other two wounded men were taken to hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning.

"These type of killings are senseless, and these killings must be stopped. Friends killing friends, brothers killing brothers, community members killing each other, it must be stopped," SSP Miller lamented.

Radio Jamaica News was informed that Mr. Calvin drove to the scene after he received information that his son had been shot.

It's reported that, on his arrival, he saw the fleeing gunmen and rammed his vehicle into their motorcycle.

The men then opened fire on the vehicle, hitting him several times.

Radio Jamaica News was further informed that the gunmen attacked a passing motorcyclist and opened fire on him.

The man was shot from his motorcycle which was then stolen by the fleeing gunmen.

He's now hospitalised.

Five murders were recorded in Hanover between Thursday night and early Friday morning.

Meanwhile, National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang has said more resources will be deployed to Hanover to combat the rise in criminal activities in the parish.

Dr. Chang, who visited the site of Thursday night's shooting, said lottery scamming and gun-running are behind the surge in violence in Western Jamaica.
