Transport Authority targeting illegal public passenger vehicle operators

By Halshane Burke

The Transport Authority says it has stepped up measures to go after illegally operated public transportation services across the island.

This follows the March 31 expiration of the majority of public passenger vehicle road licences.

Managing Director of the Authority Ralston Smith says the agency has adopted a zero tolerance approach as it seeks to implement several standards for the operation of public transportation services.

He says this will enhance the safety and security of the commuting public and all road users, as well as the reliability and efficiency of public transportation services.

The Authority is reminding all public passenger vehicle operators to abide by the relevant regulations, as those found in breach will be prosecuted by the Transport Authority's route inspectors and police, in accordance with the provisions of the law.

Operators found without the requisite licence may also face seizure of their vehicles.

In the meantime, commuters are being urged to check for the red plate and TA sticker on the windscreen, and ensure the drivers are wearing their PPV badges, as a safety precaution, before taking public transportation.

The Transport Authority is urging operators to renew their road licence, using the Online Application portal at http://www.ta.org.jm.
