Tropical Storm Dean to affect Jamaica

Weather forecasters are closely monitoring Tropical Storm Dean which could affect Jamaica by this weekend.

The system is racing across the Atlantic heading for the Lesser Antilles.

The National Hurricane Centre says the storm is still far from land.

Late afternoon, the eye of the storm was 11 hundred miles west of the Cape Verde Islands and 13 hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles, barreling westwards at almost 21 miles per hour.

Dean is expected to strengthen Wednesday.

It has maximum sustained winds of up to 40 miles an hour and tropical-storm winds extending 35 miles from the centre.

Forecasters say Dean is likely to cross the chain of the Lesser Antilles on Friday, pass south of Puerto Rico on Saturday and approach Jamaica on Sunday if it remains on the current track.
