Trump's tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico takes effect today

US President Donald Trump on Saturday confirmed an immediate imposition of tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China.

There will now be a 25 per cent tariff on Mexico and Canada and 10 per cent on China.

But on Friday Trump said Canadian oil would be hit with a lower tariff of 10 per cent, which could take effect later, on February 18.

He also said he planned to impose tariffs on the European Union in the future, saying the bloc had not treated the US well.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the Canada and Mexico tariffs were in response to the illegal fentanyl, which she claimed those two countries had sourced and allowed to be distributed in the US, causing numerous deaths.

Donald Trump has also repeatedly said the move was to address the large numbers of undocumented migrants that have come across US borders, and trade deficits with America's neighbours.
