By Prince Moore

Two Jamaicans are believed to have drowned after the boat they were travelling in was intercepted by Haitian authorities.

Haiti's National Police Counter-Narcotics Unit confirmed that officers in Port-de-Paix, along with the local prosecutor's office, intercepted a boat laden with drugs.

According to the Haitian authorities, the two Jamaicans drowned during the operation.

One body has since been recovered and taken to the morgue, while a Bahamian national is in custody.

Haitian police say they seized more than 90 kilograms of cocaine and believe several other suspicious boats are still at large.

They have described the operation as a first in the history of the country's northwest region.

The Bahamian government says it is awaiting official confirmation that two of its nationals may have been killed in the Haiti operation as well, and that a third is being held.

The Bahamian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says its embassy in Port-au-Prince has received unconfirmed reports of the deaths and is in communication with Haitian authorities.
