Two men were fatally shot and five illegal firearms seized during operations by the Area One police on Tuesday.

Senior Superintendent Glenford Miller, acting head of Area One, said several persons were also taken into custody in connection with the firearms seized.

SSP Miller said the operations yielded success in St. James and Hanover.

In St. James, a rifle as well as a handgun were seized, and several people taken into custody.

"In the Hanover space, a pistol was seized, one man arrested, and while the police had a search warrant, they went to Green Island, where they were actually confronted. During their execution of the warrant, a man actually pointed a fireman at police, who immediately defended themselves, and he was fatally arrested. Another man, hearing what was happening, actually run into the direction of the police with a firearm, and the police actually seized that firearm, and he was fatally arrested also," SSP Miller reported.

He said Green Island continues to pose a challenge for the police.

"Since the start of the year, Green Island in particular, has seen over 12 murders, which is not the norm for Hanover. Criminals want to take over our space, and we will not tolerate that. That will not happen," he declared.

"The law-abiding citizens of this country, especially those persons who live in Hanover, work in Hanover, do business in Hanover, must live in peace in Hanover and feel safe. And we, the police, we're here. We will continue to protect them, and try to ensure their safety and security at all time."
