Many of the items were looted during the Anglo-Asante wars, while some were part of an indemnity payment that the British forcibly extracted from the Asante king.
The agreement comes amid ongoing calls for Western museums to return stolen property.
According to a report commissioned by French President Emmanuel Macron, no less than 90% of African cultural property resides in European museums.
