United Nations Secretary General António Guterres says he intends to present to the United Nations Security Council a new initiative aimed at supporting security and stability in Haiti.
Addressing the opening of the 48th regular meeting of CARICOM leaders in Barbados on Wednesday night, Mr. Guterres said the initiative would be similar to one being used by the global organisation in Somalia.
According to that plan, the UN assumes the responsibility of the structural and logistical expenditures necessary to put the Kenya led security mission in place, and the payment of salaries through the trust fund that already exists.
Haiti is facing a crisis following the assassination in July 2021 of then president Jovenel Moïse.
Criminal gangs are seeking to take complete control of the capital Port au Prince, and have launched several deadly attacks.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness left the island on Wednesday to attend the CARICOM Heads of Government meeting.
He is scheduled to return to Jamaica on Saturday.
The conference, which runs from February 19 to 21, will bring together regional leaders to discuss key issues affecting the Caribbean, including food and nutrition security, climate resilience and regional security.
