UNIA President Steven Golding
President of the Universal Negro Improvement Association Steven Golding is calling for sweeping changes to how senators are selected in Jamaica, including direct elections instead of political appointments.
This call follows a pledge by the People's National Party to expand Senate representation by including members of the Rastafari and Maroon communities, along with representation from other marginalized groups.
Mr Golding, speaking Thursday on The Morning Agenda, on Power 106, said the move shows the PNP is paying attention to historically marginalized communities.
Nevertheless, he contends that the PNP's plan lacks clarity on how those representatives would be selected.
Currently, senators are appointed by the Governor-General, acting on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader.
Meanwhile, Mr. Golding wants two guaranteed Senate seats for members of the Maroons community.
He emphasized that the UNIA's position should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any political party.
