United States Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez has praised Jamaica’s decision to discontinue its medical cooperation programme with Cuba, describing the long-running arrangement as a "pathetic, criminal human trafficking operation".
In a post on X, Mr. Gimenez claimed Cuban doctors were being trafficked, their wages garnished, and that they were subjected to inhumane conditions amounting to modern-day slavery.
His latest remarks come a week after he criticised Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness over comments about Cuba made during the recent CARICOM summit.
Addressing regional leaders last Tuesday, Dr. Holness said Jamaica and Cuba share deep historical ties, noting that Cuban doctors and teachers have supported countries across the region, including Jamaica.
Gimenez responded on social media, warning that Jamaica could face consequences and accusing the governing Jamaica Labour Party of covering up for what he described as Cuba’s moribund dictatorship.
