The United States Customs and Border Protection is cautioning green card holders with a criminal history that they are not immune from detention or deportation.
In a statement, the agency stressed that having permanent resident status does not automatically make someone a law abiding resident. It reminded that a green card is a privilege not a right and can be revoked if the holder is found to have violated US laws.
The CBP says lawful permanent residents with power criminal convictions may face mandatory detention if they present themselves at a US port of entry.
This may also lead to immigration removal proceedings.
The warning comes as President Donald Trump pushes ahead with campaign promises to crack down on illegal immigration, something he has repeatedly linked to crime in the US.
Since the start of President Trump's second term in January, fear and uncertainty have grown among Caribbean nationals, including Jamaicans, with many choosing to limit travel outside of the US out of concern, they may face challenges reentering the country.
But during a visit to Jamaica in March, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sought to reassure the public, saying there is no need for concern among law abiding permanent residents.
