US treasury sanctions Guyana officials and entities for alleged corruption scheme

The Guyana government announced yesterday that it had sent the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Mae Thomas, on leave with immediate effect after she was named along with two others for their alleged roles in public corruption.

The United States Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control said it had imposed sanctions on Mrs. Thomas, Nazar Mohamed, his son, Azruddin Mohamed, and their company.

It announced that it had also designated two other entities, Hadi's World and Team Mohamed's Racing Team, for being owned or controlled by Mohamed's Enterprise and Azruddin, respectively.

According to the US authorities, from 2019 to 2023, Mohamed's Enterprise omitted more than ten thousand kilogrammes of gold from import and export declarations and avoided paying more than 50 million dollars in duty taxes to the Government of Guyana.

It says Mohamed's Enterprise also engaged in extensive bribery of government officials, which enriched the corrupt actors involved, undermined Guyanese institutions, and deprived citizens of important revenues.

The US Government also claims Mrs. Thomas misused her position as Permanent Secretary from October 2020 to August 2023 to offer benefits to Mohamed's Enterprise and Azruddin in exchange for cash payments and high-value gifts.
