US$1.5m stolen from Bermuda seniors in online fraud since last January, police report

Police in Bermuda say online fraudsters have robbed senior citizens of an estimated US$1.5 million since January last year.

The Bermuda Police Service said the Financial Crime Unit has investigated 18 cases, and in one instance, the fraudsters were able to receive US$250,000 from one person.

The police described the scam as a form of elder abuse and urged the public to help protect senior citizens against falling victim to scams in which bad actors take advantage of their vulnerabilities.
