The Student’s Union Council at the University of Technology has ended a stand-off with the university’s administration, following their last meeting to discuss the university's fees.
Union President Joel Brown, speaking with Radio Jamaica News, said the Council had secured significant reductions in the fees.
For Jamaican students, semester-one fees have been cut from J$60,000 to $50,000, while semester-two fees will fall to $40,000..
For international students, semester-one fees have been reduced from US$400 to $312 while semester-two fees will drop to $250.
On tuition, Mr Brown said the Council successfully pushed back against the administration's proposed 10 per cent increase.
Incoming students will now face a seven per cent increase, while returning students will see a five per cent increase.
Mr Brown commended the university’s administration for compromising, saying both sides are acting in the best interest of students while protecting the institution’s financial health.
Looking ahead, Mr Brown told Radio Jamaica News that the Council has secured, in principle, an agreement for a zero-per cent tuition increase for the 2027/2028 academic year and a similar freeze on the Enrollment Commitment Deposit for the same period.
He said the agreement is subject to there being no increases from external suppliers.
The Student Union and the UTech administration are scheduled to meet again in November to review government support and the university's financial performance. That assessment will help determine whether the zero per cent tuition increase can remain in place.
Mr Brown said the Council remains committed to leading the change and delivering results for students.
