The West Indies Group of University Teachers (WIGUT), representing lecturers at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus, has suspended its planned industrial action.
This followed a consolation meeting held Tuesday at the Minister of Labour between WIGUT and the management of UWI.
WIGUT says following discussions, the ministry requested that the parties return to the local level for negotiations.
The Labour Minister agreed to take up the grievance within 72 hours of the union referring the matter to the ministry, should negotiations fail to produce a satisfactory outcome.
In light of the ministry's recommendation, WIGUT has advised its members to resume normal duties as of today (Wednesday), while the matter is pursued as a grievance.
WIGUT had served an ultimatum and threatened industrial action for this Monday following a decision by UWI to reduce health and pension benefits to new staff in Jamaica.
WIGUT complained that the University Council made the decision unilaterally, and in the absence of a negotiated agreement with any of the unions operating on the campus.
The reduced benefits will affect employees joining the staff on or after August 1, 2025, and was instructed by the Council for the Mona campus.
