Vegetable prices skyrocket after hurricane ravages St. Elizabeth

Consumers in St. Elizabeth are paying more for vegetables after many farms were ravaged by Hurricane Melissa.

In Santa Cruz Market, sweet peppers are being sold for $800 per pound, cabbage is $600, carrots $600, tomatoes $500, lettuce $800 and cauliflower $700.

As one farmer from Red Bank in the southeast of the parish explained, consumers will be seeing increased prices for produce for some time.

Andre Robinson, who was in the process of selling his cauliflower, when Radio Jamaica News caught up with him on Friday, said farmers will struggle to recover.

"...Everything mash up, everything under water. Carrot under water, sweet pepper under water, melon under water," he lamented, adding that this will drive up the price of these items.

Agriculture Minister Floyd Green has said he expects to receive a comprehensive report on the impact of the storm on the breadbasket parishes by him Monday.
