A woman has been fined for attempting to smuggle prohibited items into the Horizon Adult Remand Centre earlier this year.
The Department of Correctional Services says the woman, Dorothy Weekly, was charged on February 6 for breaching Section 80 of the Corrections (Amendment) Act, 2021.
Reports are Ms. Weekly visited the facility to deliver clothing items intended for a remandee to wear during a court appearance.
During a routine search of the items, a correctional officer detected a foul odour, which prompted further examination.
The search revealed signs of tampering with a pair of black Nike sneakers.
Upon closer inspection, vegetable matter resembling ganja, along with rizzla and tobacco, was discovered concealed within the footwear.
When questioned, Ms. Weekly confirmed that the items, including the sneakers, were those she had brought into the institution.
She was transported to the police station where she was formally charged and brought before the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court, Criminal Division where she pleaded guilty.
She was fined $10,000 or ten days imprisonment.
People caught smuggling banned items could face a maximum fine of $3 million or up to three years' imprisonment on conviction in the Parish Court and up to five years on conviction in the Circuit Court.
