A woman and her granddaughter have been swept away by floodwaters in Montego Bay, St. James.

It's understood they were among four people travelling in a car along the Westgate main road about 3:40 p.m. when they encountered flood waters.

The driver and his daughter escaped the waters.

However, his wife and granddaughter were swept away and remain missing.

It's understood that a rescue is not possible at the moment because of the heavy rain and flooding.

Stephen Shaw, Communication Manager at the National Works Agency (NWA), says several roadways in St. James are being affected by the rain.

Flooding has been reported in downtown Montego Bay, while landslides are impacting roads from Fairfield to Point.

Sections of the road in Spring Mount have been reduced to a single lane.

Eastern flooding

Mr. Shaw said some roads in the eastern section of the island are also only accommodating single lane traffic due to the rains.

Roads from Pleasant Valley to Hectors River, Hordley Crossing and Amity Hall can only facilitate heavy vehicles.

Water in areas like Hordley Crossing, which had been flooded earlier, have receded, but Mr. Shaw warned that they could again become flooded if the rain continues.
