The Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network is expressing deep sadness following the tragic death of Ocho Rios High School student Devonie Shearer, after an altercation with a peer, describing the incident as another wake-up call about violence in Jamaica's schools.
The organisation says the tragedy highlights the growing concern of peer-on-peer violence and is urging stronger efforts to equip students with the skills to resolve conflicts peacefully.
JYAN is calling for conflict resolution education, mediation training, and de-escalation strategies to be integrated into the school curriculum.
Executive Director Shannique Bowden has also called for a coordinated response from the Ministries of Education, Justice, and National Security to strengthen safety in schools.
The organization is further urging the Ministry of Education to fast-track the School Safety Policy and conduct safety audits, including improving emergency response systems and ensuring staff are trained in first aid and crisis response.
JYAN says protecting young people requires a collective effort involving schools, families, and communities, stressing that no child should die in a place meant for learning and growth.
