Opposition Spokesperson on Foreign, Regional & Diaspora Affairs, Senator Donna Scott Mottley, is calling for the Government to explain its decision to end Jamaica's long-standing medical cooperation programme with Cuba.
Mrs Scott-Mottley, in a strong response to the decision on Saturday, said the Government has a duty to provide clarity on both the reasons for the decision and the arrangements that will replace this important partnership.
The programme, which has been in place for five decades, has seen Cuban doctors and other medical professionals working in hospitals and clinics across the island, helping to address shortages in medical staff.
Senator Scott Mottley argued that a programme of such a long duration "cannot simply come to an abrupt end without the Jamaican people being given clear and comprehensive account of what has led to that outcome."
She also contends that the public needs to be informed "of the practical implications of this decision," and the country given assurances that there are "clear and effective plans in place to maintain continuity of care, particularly in facilities where Cuban medical professionals have been providing important services."
