Eliud Williams replaces Nicholas Liverpool

Former senior public servant in Dominica, Eluid Williams, was on Monday elected head of state replacing outgoing President Nicholas Liverpool in an election that was boycotted by the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) legislators.

Police mounted tight security around the parliament building on the outskirts of the capital where UWP leader Edison James told party supporters that the election of  Mr. Williams would be challenged in the courts.

Mr. Williams, who received 21 votes during the voting in the Dominica parliament, was the nominee of the ruling Dominica Labour Party  government.

Speaker Alix Boyd-Knights says she received a letter of resignation from President Liverpool citing ill health and that the parliamentary session earlier today was a continuation of a special sitting called on August 24 when legislators were informed of Mr. Liverpool's decision to step down
