Lester Bird loses ALP leadership race

Former Antiguan Prime Minister, Lester Bird, has been defeated in the race for the leadership of the Opposition Antigua Labour Party, ALP.

It's the first time in over 60 years that the party has elected a leader who is not a member of the Bird family.

On Sunday, Gaston Browne defeated Mr. Bird, who was the incumbent, by a 213-180 margin to take control of the ALP.

However Mr. Browne also announced that he will marry Maria Bird, the niece of the party's former leader.

The battle for leadership of the ALP narrowed to just Mr. Browne and Mr Bird, after two other challengers withdrew their candidacy and pledged their support for the incumbent.

In his victory speech, Mr. Browne and called on all ALP supporters to recommit themselves to defeating the ruling Unity Labour Party, UPP, in Antigua's next general elections.
