The opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP) in the British Virgin Islands won Monday's general election capturing seven of the 15 seat house of assembly in the British dependent territory.
Preliminary results show that the VIP has won seven seats so far with the incumbent Kevin Pickering being the only successful candidate from the National Democratic Party which held the reigns of government before the polls. Independent candidate Alvin Christopher who was endorsed by the VIP during campaigning regained his seat in the second district beating the NDP's George Henry and thus was the only successful independent candidate.
There are four more seats at stake in the territorial district and at the moment counting is underway.
Supervisor of Elections, Julian Penn said a new Cabinet could be sworn in later Tuesday.
The next leader of the BVI will be known as Premier instead of Chief Minister because of a change in the new constitution for the territory.
